Left unserviced, a furnace can stop working suddenly, leaving your family in the cold!!  One of the questions I get asked most often is whether it is necessary to get an oil burner cleaned every year.  In  short, you probably don't HAVE to get it cleaned every year but it is highly recommended. I think of getting your oil burner services as analogous to  going to the dentist every six months for a checkup and cleaning; probably not necessary, but recommended. For newer furnaces, you may be able to have them checked every other year, but once they're more than 10 years old, have them checked annually.
